The beginning of various fables, legends and songs that survive even today in the traditions of villages of Peninsula of Methana, these have direct relations with the contact of residents with habits and beliefs in the passing of centuries. The residents of Peninsula have song various traditional songs and have created histories and fables for their various regions and stories for neibours. The social life existed rather conservative with main and stable institution of family. The men farmers, craftsmen, fishermen and seamen while the women they dealt with the household, the upbringing of children but also with works of ground and the craftsmanship. Are even saved today great looms, where the girls wove artistic works of art. The traditional costume of women has characteristic the beautiful handmade apron, the weaver wool coat and big white pinner.

Old, somebody had charged his boat with barrels of wine and he went to Athens in order to sells these. In the street were raised waves and he implored Virgin Mary to help him to go well to his destination and he would make a church from wine. Really Virgin Mary helped him and, when he turned, he made a church very small. For building, mixed ground with wine instead of water and, for this reason, the part that built the church was named Virgin Mary of wine. In other variant this person is tradesman, does not reach in his destination but, after was saved with the help of Virgin Mary, afterwards built the church using little wine that had remained.

   The fable of “Tank of Groom”

“Sometimes a candidate groom began from “Kammeni” Country in order to go to take the bride from one village of Northern side of Methana. In the street he was thirsty and he bent to drink water from a tank. However, the unlucky young person slipped and fell in the tank and was drowned. From then they say that the village took the name “Tank of Groom”.

  Legends and guesses

The fear of simple persons of countryside for the future is impressed in narrations as below:

They say that Methana are stand in three or five pillars.  Most have cracked and one has broken. If break all, will be destroyed Methana.

 The poverty of farmers and cattle-breeders pushes them to manufacture fables for lost treasures that wait the lucky that he will find them and he will take these. In the case of Methana it deserves, to search why is given enough emphasis in golden turtles.

Old, in Methana founding one princess. She had an enormous turtle and her babies were all from gold. This turtle and her babies was buried  in a region of Methana.

For where they are found there are a lot of opinions. Others say that somebody stole them and others say that they are found to one of the villages of Methana. The big turtle has not found. Old, they said that in the place “Throni” existed seven golden turtles, one big and six small. When we have war with the Germans, they took the big turtle and then is ignored the chance of rests.(Photographs)
