The
beauty of the picturesque Penisnsula surrounds you. The
whole area is charged with the magic of the view and of its history.
The city's priceless gem, the "Nisaki" (little island), on which youcan
find the church
Agii
Anargiri and the remains of the cyclopean walls, lays in the
midst of the deep blue waters and is surrounded by a lavish forest of
pine trees. The quaint Nisaki is linked to the shore by a narrow strip
of land which looks like an Isthmus. The clean waters and the well-
organised beach attract the pyblic who want to enjoy swimming, fishing
and water sports. In the evenin, as the moon makes its way across the
sky, the pace changes and visitors can enjoy a romantic stroll on the
"little island".
On
the other side of the seafront, the tradisional building of the
health- spa add their own unique "colour" to the town. In front of
them we
can see a deep blue lake, which owes its colours to the sulphur found in
the thermo- metallic waters, while the natural harbour of Methana with
it beautiful little island, offers s safe resting place to the
modern-day sea traveller. In the Northern part of the town, the lavishly
green landscape embraces the sea to form the quaint sandy
beach of Limiona.
On
the Eastern and Western sides of the Peninsula, we can find big and
small villages, built eithew on the sides of the mountains or along the
coast. Here, away from the fast paces of modern life that cause so much
stress, and away from the large crowds of the major tourist centres, the
visitor can find the peace and recreation [s] he seeks.
Dristeika,Megalohorion, Megalo Potami, Kammeni Gi, Vathi, Makrilogos,
Palea Loutra, Kounoupitsa, Agios Georgios, Agios Nikolaos. Agii Theodori,
Kipseli. They are all beautiful, picturesque, traditional,
hospitable. They connect via modern roads which pass through wonderful
natural landscapes.
On the quaint beaches of Bathi, Almira, Agiow Georgios and Agios
Nikolaos you can taste octapus barbaque and fresh fish, as well as
enjoying swimming. To those who enjoy hiking the area can offer
numerous footpaths on the slopes of the mountain, along which one can
see many rare aromatic plants and therapeutic herbs. Even if you are not
a
fisherman, you are sure to want to try your luck in one of the opulent
fishing places of the area. In the Paleokastron, in Throni, in Nisaki,
in Magoula, in Oga, on the summit of Helona, in Agios Nikolaos, in
Steno, on the hill of Agios Konstantinos and everywhere on the
Peninsula, you can see the ruins of ancient cities, archeological
findings, Byzantine churches and monuments that represent the whole
chronological scope and offer proof of the Peninsula's long history from
the Neolithic Era until the recent years. The ascent to the main volcano
crater in Kammeni Hora, with the other two smaller parasitical craters
northeast to the main one, is a unique experience which "wakes" the
visitor's senses to the awesome beauty of the land and to the panoramic
view of the endless blue of Saronikos.
