Many thousands of years before the first eruption there were limestone mountains such as Asprovouni and the cape Krasopanagia. The cave found in the location Steno proved that the mountain Asprovouni is 2.5 million years old. Near this there is one of the most beautiful caves in the area, which was found by four residents of Methana in 1973 and was named "spileo ton peristerion" (cave of the doves). It is 250 metres long and is divided into three compartments.
