It is believed to have erupted between 276 and 239 BC during the reign of Antigonos Gonatas. This historic event is described by Stravon, Pafsanias and Obidios. To date thirty volcanic craters have been found in the area. The most important of these is believed to the one found near the village "Kammeni Hora", which has been built in a unique position on the edge of the red lava.
