The Methana Peninsula is considered to be the product of earlier
volcanic activity. Proof of this can be found in the kind of rock found
on the peninsula as well as in the many craters that exist there. The
volcanic centre of Methana belongs to the volcanic arch that links the
volcanoes of Sousakion, Egina, Poros, Belopoula, Karavi, Falkonera,
Antimilos, Milos, Kimolos, Polibos Stroggilon, Despotikon, Spiridonisia,
Antiparos, Christiana, Santorini, Kos, Nisiros, Alikarnasos and Patmos.
This arch moves along a number of crevices the cracks in which caused
the volcanic activity in the south Aegian sea. There were many volcanic
eruptions during the third period - right after the formation of the
Alps - which continued into the fourth period.

We find the remains of many volcanic erruptions on the peninsula. On the
SE of the hill of Helona, in the locations Stravologos and Makrilogos,
we find large craters. We also find craters in Ano Mouska, in the
village Kameni Hora, next to Agios Andreas, next to Zoodoxos Pigi, in
Kipseli. Up to date thirty (30) volcanic cratershave been found
scattered across the peninsula. C. Mitsopoulos started recording these
findings in 1867. From the above-mentioned craters, the ones that were
last active are those, which are at close proximity to the village
Kammeni Hora. Proof of this is found in the metallic substance that
remains as well as in the current morphology of the land (minimal
erosion). Fougue admits that the eruption in Kammeni Hora is the one
mentioned by Stravon, Obidios and Pafsanias.
The exact date of this eruption is unknown. It is however estimated to
have taken place between the years 277-240 BC. Today the volcano is
considered inactive, as there has been no recorded activity for
centuries. The main crater of the volcano is on a conical summit (425
metres) northwest of the village Kammeni Hora. The emission of this
crater forms a narrow stream that pours into the nearby sea. The main
crater is approximately 100 metres in diamџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџџ
